Marketing vs. Systems: Why Both Matter for Sales

Marketing isn't the only thing in business that impacts your sales—systems are just as important. When you focus on systems, you’re also focusing on sales. The right systems will enhance your sales efforts, not take away from them.

In this episode, I’ll share how focusing on your systems will directly impact your sales so you can confidently make more sales. For context, when I say systems, I mean the processes and tools you use to operate your business.

For example:

  • Processes: A step-by-step outline of daily tasks, like how you respond to client inquiries.

  • Tools: What connects those processes, such as a client relationship management tool (CRM).

While I’m not suggesting you stop marketing altogether, I am saying that giving attention to the back end of your business—especially when it’s not operating smoothly—will have a direct impact on your revenue. Systems keep things running efficiently, allowing you to confidently work with the clients your marketing attracts.

1. Systems Save You Time for Selling

One of the key reasons systems make it easier to sell is that they free you from low-value, repetitive tasks like:

  • Sending contract and invoice reminders

  • Scheduling meetings

  • Filing documents

These tasks are easy to do but don’t contribute much to your revenue. Spending your entire day on them leaves no time for sales.

When I conducted time studies with my last employer and some clients, I found that most of their workdays were consumed by non-revenue-generating tasks. They often ended the day feeling exhausted but disappointed because their hard work didn’t produce the results they wanted.

With systems in place, your workdays can look drastically different. Imagine confidently delegating tasks and knowing they’ll be handled correctly. Picture spending your time networking, having sales conversations, creating new services, or starting another business—all activities that bring in more money.

2. Systems Build Confidence in Your Sales Process

Systems also give you more confidence to sell by providing a clear framework for delivering excellent service and getting great results for your clients.

Here’s what I mean: during a sales call, clients often ask, “How does this process work?” When you have a step-by-step framework, you can confidently and clearly communicate your process.

Without a system, you might respond with, “It depends,” or repeat yourself, which can make you seem unsure. Instead, systems allow you to explain:

  • The steps to work with you

  • How long the service takes

  • What clients can expect

This clarity is crucial for high-ticket services. Clients feel more confident choosing you when they understand your process. I’ve had clients tell me they picked me over competitors because I could clearly articulate how I deliver results.

Strong systems also justify your pricing and results because they demonstrate the strength of your process. Clients investing significant amounts want to feel informed and certain about how everything works.

3. Systems Expand Your Capacity to Sell

Finally, systems give you the capacity to sell more. Many business owners want more clients and revenue, but poor systems limit their ability to take on additional responsibilities.

For example, I registered my business to bid on government contracts, which can be incredibly lucrative. But after reviewing the requirements, I realized my systems weren’t robust enough to support those clients. Although I knew how to fix them, the experience highlighted how essential systems are for growth.

With strong systems, you can confidently:

  • Send out large contracts

  • Take on bigger clients

  • Deliver exceptional service

When your business runs like a well-oiled machine, you’re no longer afraid or hindered in your ability to grow.

Take the Next Step

Think about where you’ve been focusing in your business. Are you prioritizing marketing while neglecting systems? Are repetitive tasks keeping you from selling? Do you doubt your customer service or results? Or are you realizing your capacity isn’t what you thought it was?

Systems can be the answer to these challenges, giving you more opportunities to sell with confidence.
